TNP And TEP Pull Events Show Effectiveness of TCALS Change

Dozens of issues were answered every second over the course of an hour

The recent pull events conducted by The North Pacific Cards Guild and TEAPOT were both a major success, producing large quantities of the targeted cards. In the case of TNP’s pull event, this was the first major publicized pull event since the TCALS change, and there were many doubts about the success of the event.
For TNP’s monthly event, Testlandia S1 and HMS Unicorn were nominated. Both cards are among the most valuable in the game, so naturally many traders were excited to try and get their hands on them. In the early half of the event, finds were limited, with the first Testlandia find coming 15 minutes after the event began, and the first Anime Daisuki find coming 10 minutes after the first set of bids. Compared to the activity feed, which showed more than 10 issues answered per second, this appeared to be a rather disproportionate spawn rate. However, things picked up, and ultimately Testlandia was found 11 times and Anime Daisuki 14 times. The copy distribution was still generally limited to the larger farmers such as Koem Kab or Feu de Glace, but less so than prior pull events under the new TCALS.
TEAPOT’s pull event was not anywhere nearly as publicized as TNP’s normal events, and traders were thrown off guard when it was announced in the cards discord a mere hour before the event started. Their victim of choice was NERVUN S2, executed by Evrigenis. Despite a lack of finds early on, traders persevered and ended up producing 9 copies.
The pull events show that large, community events are still extremely effective, even with the TCALS nerf. In this sense, it appears that the nerf was effective in removing the ability to run highly profitable personal pull events, but still allows for events where a large volume of packs will be opened by a variety of farmers.

Finds History Button Now Found on the Info Page

The finds history button extension by Riemstagrad which inspired this addition

The finds history page of a card is one of the most fascinating pages to look at, and it serves as a useful utility for determining TCALS success, finding people who junked your card, or looking for coincidences. However, not everyone used it because not everyone knew it existed. In the cards discord, one of the most frequent questions asked was “how do I access the finds history page?”. Now, the card information page features a shiny new “finds history” button that links to this page, enabling traders to easily access it without adding “/finds_history=1” to the end of every link.

The change was initiated by Riemstagrad, who made a simple Tampermonkey script that manually added the button to the information page. Once posted to the discord, traders immediately expressed their excitement over this. Within 12 hours, Ballotonia mentioned that they were also interested in placing the link on the cards information page. After a brief discussion involving SherpDaWerp, the finds history button was added in a new “cards” row, which displays the total number of copies of a card.

While a simple change, it’s nice to see the recent spur of changes being made to the cards game lately. The recent “copies” number is also extremely useful for determining if a card has been pulled, and the accessibility of the finds history page alongside it means that traders now have even more information neatly displayed in front of them when printing cards, deciding to buy something, or tracking the spawns of a card they are interested in.

The Last Card Hunger Games
After 6 exciting and bloody runs, the last CHG has come to an unexpected end. Not only have these games brought more attention to the cards discord, but they have been a lot of fun, so big thank you to Harmonic Empire for putting them together. Other users have expressed intentions to continue on with the games, so we'll have to see what happens from there.

The official report:

~~~ Card Hunger Games ~~~
Insane Day 1!
by Waiban, Harmonic Empire
Oh, what the f-ck just happened in the Last CHG?! This is probably the weirdest and, at same time, least exciting CHG to have ever happened. Literally 29 tributes just straight up died on DAY ONE because of a surprise Arena Event! And then what followed was basically a long period of time where nobody killed. Another Arena Event popped up way later, and the last three survived. And it all just went from there. But, well, congratulations, Terra Britania! You won the last CHG run! And, to my other beautiful tributes, a warm thank you for sticking with us!
Trader Spotlight
Koem Kab is the most powerful and dominant trader ever, with more deck value than the next two players combined. They control a vast puppet army, dominate pull events, and have even been condemned for their actions.
Discussion with Koem Kab
Interview conducted by Noahs Second Country
Noah: Rather than starting with a "how did you get into cards" question, I'd like to know more about your experience on NS.
Obviously, you had already been around for a while prior to the release of cards - what kept you on the site, what kind of activities did you enjoy, and does your attitude towards the game remain the same now?
Koem Kab: Before cards, the only thing I did on NS was answer issues. I did not care about anything else. I had many nations that each prioritized building up different stats. My attitude had definitely changed. I eventually got bored of building up stats for puppets and now those nations are dead, but I still care about the stats of Koem Kab and continue to answer its issues. I obviously now care about cards and this is the only thing I really care about on NS.
Noah: Your stats on Koem Kab are very impressive(if I recall correctly, you have the most gold badges out of any nation right now).
Do you ever see yourself losing interest in cards like you did with stats, and do you think you'll ever be involved with other areas of the site?
Koem Kab:Right now I don't see myself losing interest in cards. I still find it enjoyable since I am able to play extremely well. I don't see myself involving myself with other areas in the game, it simply doesn't interest me one bit.
Noah: Speaking of your puppets, is that the reason why they are named things like "fakecommunism," "testing nation44xx", etc.?
Some of my puppets are named for this reason. For example, Fake communism was meant to be technically communist but ran like it was capitalist, then I made it into a puppet chain. The puppet chains I created just for cards did not have much thought in their naming.
Noah: You do indeed play really well - I haven't really seen you make any major mistakes.
When a clumsier trader such as myself makes a mistake, you're quick to pounce on the opportunity to make some easy bank. However, this isn't always true. My accidental 3,222 bid on S1 Farnhamia was an example of this. What is your general thought process when interacting with other traders on the market?
Koem Kab:The player that I see in an auction does have an effect on my actions as I will be more aggressive to some players than others, but not too much of an effect as I will act the same in many scenarios regardless of who the other player is. Most often, I have the most leverage in an auction so I am able to take advantage of a mistake, and mistakes happen very frequently on the selling side.
In the particular case of your Farnhamia mistake, it just seemed wrong in that particular case to fight despite the staggering amount of bank, and also you were able to maintain the status quo. I actually know what it is like to be in that position as I made this mistake on Season 1 Lamoni, added an extra 0 on the bid but I didn't lose the bank.
Noah: I have a lot of respect for you doing that. I'm a "new" player to cards in the sense that I wasn't around for any of Season 1, or at least I didn't take interest in cards at the time. In contrast, you've been active since the beginning. You brought up an auction I've never heard of, so I'm curious if you have any other interesting stories about a particular auction. Is there a trade that sticks with you?
Koem Kab:There have been some big auctions that have taken place during season 1 that have occured. One in particular bring soops and mindless contempt pull events in August, where The Northern Light willingly bid 3000 each on both cards. Just an extraordinary amount to pay for a card! Both cards were pulled a few times and I pulled a mindless contempt which I used to underask which initiated an underasking war which ended in me selling to luna Amore for about 2750 and luna selling for 3000 to The Northern Light. Luna also sold soops for 3000. This resulted in both cards being inflated crazy amounts.
A different trade in particular sticks with me which was different soops trade before there one previously mentioned where I bought it when it was the only legendary I did not have. Back then soops had around 15 owners, many didn't want to sell so I had to jump in the first opportunity I saw as another soops sale wasn't a guarantee.
Noah: Similarly, cards has gone through multiple periods of change, ultimately culminating into the current meta-game today. Do you think there is one particular event or trade that sparked such change, and is the change created something you agree with?
The pergamon pull event that occurred in April was definitely a trade that sparked a big change in the meta. Now it became known that a particular card can be mass generated in a short amount of time. Pull events were primarily used as a method of exploitation. This is something that was just way too exploitable as thousands of value can be produced in a short span of time and I'm glad that this later was eventually changed. I also felt I had to exploit this feature to keep up with others.
Noah: The unregulated TCALS meta was definitely a wild time, and it has permanently imbalanced some copy counts of various s1/s2 cards.
You still largely benefited from this - is this a particularly regrettable period in cards?
Koem Kab:The TCALS nerf definitely has brought sufficient balance to the game as it takes longer for a TCALS pull to occur. One of the advantages of the old system was that you can start your pull event and you pull a few cards before anyone else notices and has a chance to jump in and you can open packs at a much faster rate than others and one player will pull almost all the cards. Now that issues have to be answered the speed gap is lessened, and there is more diversity in the pulls. However, a large effect is that people aren't as willing to do pull events as often.
This is the reason why the meta before the change will be looked at negatively. It was too easy to gain high value cards and it was an exploitation that was used for self gain. But it also will be fun to look at some of the noteworthy pull events that have occurred during that time, the consequential auctions that occurred as a result, and how some of the cards and players were affected by this meta.
I do see TCALS being used in season 3, as there will still be community-wide pull events but nowhere near the role before the change. Of course there isn't actually a way of knowing what will happen as you can't predict how the meta will change.
Noah: I'm also curious about your thoughts on inflation - many farmers are sitting on increasingly large sums of bank, and the only real "sink" is gifting fees and DV upgrades. Do you feel as if a counter-inflation mechanism(one that is more direct than TCALS) could be useful for the health of cards going into the future?
Koem Kab:Regarding the increased bank some players have, I don't think this is hurting the game too much. This doesn't seem to affect many players as only a few players have a lot of unspent bank. Ideally if there are many players with a large amount of bank, people would be willing to spend more than they currently are, increasing demand for cards and also the prices which is happening for S1 legendary cards but not so much for S2 legendary cards.
Noah: That's pretty much along the lines of what I thought you would say, it makes sense.
I have a few quick questions before wrapping things up here:
If you were to make one change to the card game, what would it be?
Koem Kab:I can't really think of any change that I'd make.
Noah: Some people claim you are multiple people controlling a single account, what is your response to this?
Koem Kab:I am one person controlling Koem Kab and all its puppets.
Noah: In your opinion, what is the most tedious part of puppet management? (ex, opening packs, answering issues, doing transfers, etc.)
Koem Kab:Answering issues is the most tedious part as it takes up most of the time and effort compared to everything else.
Noah: Do you read Card News/The Monthly Snapshot/any other kind of card-based content?
Koem Kab:I do read the 2 card based content mentioned as I receive the notification when it gets released.
Noah: How often do you receive random TGs as a result of your position? What is the most memorable one you've received?
Koem Kab:I receive several telegrams per week, a good amount are people wanting to buy a card I own, some are also people asking for a free legendary card, some are related to an auction that is occuring or just finished, and some are completely random. I would say the most memorable was being wished good luck on the condemnation which was sent while at vote.
Noah: Why do you fly the default flag?
Koem Kab:I actually had a flag which wasn't a good flag regardless, but then my nation CTE'd for a short time and I never cared about my flag after that so I left it as the default flag.
Thank you Koem Kab for your participation! The next edition of Card News will feature an interview with Midlands. If you have a particular question you want asked, please let me know!
Lessons From A Cards n00b
Written by Noahs Second Country
I was and probably still am a card noob. I started in early S2, after beginning to collect every card over on Second Best Card Archive. After realizing I enjoyed the game, I started to farm seriously thanks to the help of the cards discord. Rather than progressing, however, it appears that I have actually become more of an idiot than ever, making me a great example of what not to do. I hope to quickly guide you through 3 mistakes I make so that other traders do not make them. Feel free to ridicule me after realizing how bad I am at this game.
Lesson 1: Double Check Your Bids
Ouch
As a member of Big Farma, I have a lot of bank. In fact, I had over 11000 bank at some point recently, so I decided to buy some s1 legendary cards, since bank doesn’t really do much good for me beyond making random transfers of 10000 bank “because I can”. I had been leaving standing bids of “x.22” on every card without a reasonable ask on it, chatting in discord, and generally having a good time. However, things got just a little bit too casual, and I made a mistake.
This wasn’t just any mistake. This was an absolutely huge blunder. I bid 3,222 bank instead of a measly 32.22. Once I saw the bid go through, I had no idea what to think. Immediately I started frantically answering issues in an attempt to pull the card. One of the largest bids in history of cards… was a complete accident. Luckily, I was able to pull the copy, and I was also able to secure a backup copy from Christ Triumphant. Of course, with Koem Kab owning 40+ copies of the card, and with dozens of unique owners I was still in very hot water.
The mistake I made in missing a decimal point ended up becoming one of my most stressful hours on NationStates. 3222 bank is dozens of hours worth of farming, transferring, and trading. Please, double check your bids.
Lesson 2: Allow Time For Last Second Bids To Process
I put thousands of bank on the line semi-regularly with large transfers between various nations for various reasons. Typically, I am well prepared and never encounter any issues while doing so. I had around 7000 bank to move to a puppet for an inflation operation.. I didn’t really feel like using my own card for the transfer as I hate to pay gifting fees (in hindsight, 20 bank is such a small fee for a safe transfer of 3000 bank). I also enjoy doing things involving the number 2, so I decided to inflate the future transfer card to 2,222 bank by piggybacking 3 times at 3,702.59. I was prepared - issues were ready to be answered, I had tabs open to all the right things, I wasn’t concerned at all.
The first two piggybacks went smoothly, and I got distracted answering issues trying to pull the card. All of a sudden, the clock was at 10 seconds and the third value needed to be added. I quickly copy-pasted the value into the box, thinking I had barely made it. Instead, the worst possible scenario occurred: I missed the auction by a single second, starting a brand new 60 minute auction with 3700 on the line. Even worse, Koem Kab pulled the card.
While Koem Kab didn’t heist me (all hail the cards overlord!), this enabled him to later deflate the card’s price pretty significantly and print a fresh copy, which is unfortunate. The moral of the story here is clear: leave 10-15 seconds of leeway when adding bids or asks to a transaction, otherwise you may end up in a terrible position.
Lesson 3: Double Check Before Cleaning Puppets
I really try to support as many collections as I can, matching hundreds of bids every time I open packs, and I sell to anyone who needs a card I own, as long as I don’t need it for my own purposes. I’ll even gift my own card if someone may need it for a collection. Unfortunately, I am subject to mistakes and have junked many 0/1 owner cards by going too quickly.
This doesn’t seem like the biggest deal, but for collectors such as Giovanniland, junking cards that they need to complete their impressive collections is devastating. I apologize in advance for anyone I have done this to. With the addition of the finds history button, checking to see who junked that last card you need is easier than ever. Don’t be that person blocking someone’s collection due to negligence, keep an eye out for unmatched bids.
How to Avoid Being Me
The 3 above mistakes are not the only idiotic things I’ve done in NS cards. However, I pointed out the above 3 because they are the most dangerous to any traders, even on a much smaller scale. Beyond simply paying more attention to what you’re doing, I have 2 primary tips on how you can avoid huge losses.
The first one is to self-match. This is a tactic I use quite frequently, as self matches do not affect MV, and you do not lose anything if the transaction goes through. For example, if you accidentally go too high on a card you own and start a dropping sequence, you can stop it by matching with yourself. If you place a ridiculously low ask by accident (@9003), then you can always match with yourself and most people will elect to leave you alone.
The second tip I have is to utilize the cards community. I and many others will help players out if they happen to be in a tough scenario, whether it’s a heist, and accidental bid, or anything else. Simply put, the cards discord, cards guild, and other organizations consist of trustworthy people who are willing to help a person out when in need.
Collection Spotlight
By Giovanniland - forum thread
Here we go again with another collection spotlight! Check some notable collections that have come to attention recently:
Rainbow: Collected by Vylixan in a puppet nation, this colorful collection surely has lots of pleasing cards! The viewer can also notice some meanings beyond the rainbow, such as Pride.
Chart Toppers: Here's every nation that is #1 for any stat! The twist is that, rather than looking for the badges as recorded on December, the owner The Cosmic Mainframe says it is a dynamic collection! Thus, it's bound to change when a nation loses its #1 spot in a stat to someone else.
Men of God: A rising collection by East blepia! It has more than 100 cards that aim to represent different religions of the world.
Bookends: First & Last Cards of Seasons 1 & 2: At last, a small but unique collection by Luna Amore's puppet Steampunk Ariel. It contains copies of Testlandia, an expensive card with ID #1, as well as copies of rare, ceased-to-exist cards that are each the last for their season.
