The Tiraminan Lunar Colony, situated on Tiramina's moon, is home to about ten thousand people. In addition to habitation, the primary roles of the colony are as a spaceport, dry dock for spacecraft construction, and mining of minerals and water ice. The Tiraminan Lunar Colony was originally conceived as two separate lunar research bases by the Alanoran and Belarian space agencies, each establishing their own in close vicinity of each other. Following the political unification of the Tiraminan homeworld after The War, the colonies are administered as one under the Tiraminan government.

Operation

Using electrolysis, the abundant water ice can undergo electrolysis, causing the hydrogen and oxygen of water to become split apart. The freed oxygen is pumped into the airtight building to maintain life support. When sizeable sources of water ice are found, mining bots are sent to extract it and return to the colony. To make the ice drinkable, large contaminants are removed in water purifiers. In order to keep these basic functions running, a combination of fusion reactors and solar panels are deployed to generate the energy required to operate the entire colony. The abundance of helium-3 on the moon is used to fuel the fusion reactors.

For food, the colonists maintain hydroponic farms in addition to the yearly shipments of goods from Tiramina. During The War, shipments from Tiramina were disrupted creating a heavy reliance on hydroponics and subsequent development of the hydroponic farm. The advancements to hydroponics, as well as to genetic engineering of crops, have benefited the development of vertical farms during the famine period following The War.

After The War, interest in space resumed and the colony had more resources and funding. The frequency of shipments made to the colony increased with the goal of giving it an industrial capacity. One of the first facilities to be built as a result of this was the dry dock, where spacecraft are produced. Because the cost of launching spacecraft from the moon are significantly reduced due to lower gravity, building spacecraft from the moon is generally preferred. Lunar mining operations increased by magnitudes after this, since materials could be delivered to Tiramina fairly regularly. The moon is one of the top exporters of ice in Tiramina.

Industry

The lunar colony was converted from a purely research capacity into a mining, fuel production, and spacecraft construction colony after The War. The demand for lunar ice, which contains fresh water urgently needed on Tiramina, is the foundation of the lunar mining industry. The water splitting process necessary on the colony to produce breathable oxygen also produces excess hydrogen used as fuel. Spacecraft production on the moon is primarily to make spacecraft that transports lunar goods to and from itself.

Mining
The moon is one of the top exporters of water ice to the planet Tiramina. The abundance of freshwater ice and the demand for water on Tiramina after plasma bombs vaporized significant amounts on the planet created a thriving ice mining industry. When significant deposits of ice are identified on the moon, often in permanently shaded areas or underground, mining bots are dispatched to extract it and return it to the colony. In addition to ice, the lunar colony also mines lanthanides, scandium, and yttrium which are needed to produce electronics, magnets, alloys, and other goods.

Fuel
In moon rock are concentrations of helium-3 in greater abundance than on Tiramina, which is useful for powering fusion reactors. The mining operations of the lunar colony produces great quantities of moon rock from which helium-3 is extracted from. The water splitting process used to produce breathable oxygen from lunar ice also produces hydrogen for hydrogen fuel. These two types of fuel are transported to Tiramina and forms the basis of the moon's fuel industry.

Spacecraft construction
The cost of launching spacecraft from the moon is significantly cheaper than launching from Tiramina because of the gravitational and atmospheric factors. On the moon, where there is significantly less gravity and hardly any atmosphere, escape velocity is lower and fuel costs for launch are cheaper. The dry dock on the moon produces spacecraft to be launched from the moon, whether its for transportation back to Tiramina or to somewhere else.

Controversy

Territoriality
The lunar territories of the former states of Alanora and Belar, the two countries to hold lunar colonies, were strictly defined by treaty and international council. When The War erupted between the two countries, the fate of the lunar colonies was uncertain: would the lunar colonies fight? There were no provisions for this in international law, nor did anyone on Tiramina pay much attention to this problem before it happened. In the end, aside from minor incidents tantamount to bar fights between lunar colonists, no significant battle had actually occurred. When Alanora absorbed Belar after the formation of the Tiraminan global government, all the lunar colonists became Tiraminan citizens.
