Greetings, Comrades

The Featured Five

The MoDA is in charge of conducting the Featured Five. This is where five
random members of the DSA are featured to the region. Say hi to these
nations. Learn about them. They're special.

Interview with Solus Unus

Our tenth interview is with Solus unus. She was the Minister
of Domestic Affairs from the 19th-22nd and the 27th
Cabinets and the Minister of Justice of the 25th Cabinet.
She is now a Cabinet Aide of Space and Stuff in the
Ministry of Role-Play.

When did you first join NationStates?
How did you first hear about it?

It was early December 2015, I'm not sure of the exact date. I
actually found NS through Linkhttps://xkcd.com/802/
(The second online communities map), and then tried it
because I wanted to.

When did you join the DSA? Were you just looking at
regions when you found us or did you come through
recruitment telegram?

I first went to USSD, because when I originally made my
nation, I was having a bit of an isolationist streak and liked
their "no WA" idea. However, I quickly learned that USSD's
map was bad and in general was not for me, and then found
A Liberal Union. They did not have a map, so I looked at their
embassy regions, and found the DSA. This all took less than
two weeks after I joined NS

What are some things you've come to enjoy about the
DSA most? A favorite memory?

I enjoyed my first Z-Day, because Z-Day is fun a first time,
mediocre a second time, and really bad afterwards. I also
have come to enjoy voice chats when they do not contain
toxic individuals.

What do you do outside of NationStates? Examples: what
your job (if employed)? Hobbies? Talents? etc

Cry, mostly. I am also a programmer and a mathematician.

What made you decide to join the DSA government,
whether intially or now?

I wanted to join the government because that seemed cool.
I lost my first bid in the 18th Cabinet, and Celle franca
promised they would nominate me for the next term. I was
the first nomination in, as they jumped in and nommed me
for MDA. I've been on and off in government ever since.

Who are some people whom you've come to consider
good friends in the DSA?

Obviously, as most people know, I am dating Sparrow Isle,
so I'd say I consider her a pretty darn good friend. In
addition, I quite enjoy the company of Daophi,
Student Loan Debt, 124mm10, Xingal, Cheeseworld,
and Gribelt.

What are your plans for the future in your life? What
do you hope to be or accomplish before you die? Or more
simply and less macabre, within the next 20 years?

The climate change caused calamity created by humans
probably means there's not much of a future in the next
20 years, but if there is, I want to move to Canada to get
away from how not-good America is to trans people, and
be either a programmer or mathematician (or both)
somewhere there.

The Mystic Moons of Eumolpus

We are pleased to host a special edition column for Eumolpus moons. It was
no secret that, since they are the biggest planet-moon system, they would
get a special commemoration. L.O.A.C.E. under the service of the Hubble
Space Program and the regional Office of Astronautics and Celestial
Events, completed the study of the moons of Eumolpus, 8 in total, and
presents them right away.

The main vehicle of exploration was Discoverer-Argonaut 1, which
traveled throughout the system in 21 days, with a figure-8 motion
entering from Ajax and exiting from Odysseus. Binding in each and
every secular moon gravity nest, Discoverer-Argonaut 1 had the chance,
using the precise technology of Laserscope™, to study in depth the basic
aspects of all moons. The moons, accompanied with their photo, are are
shown next in order of appearance:

Ajax

Winter Olympia Games

We are approaching the Winter Solstice, which means that the
Winter Olympia Games are about to begin. However, they
cannot begin unless we know where they are being hosted.
That is for the people of the DSA to decided. Linked below is
a poll featuring the three nations that volunteered to host the
games where you can vote as to which nation should host
the games.

The Straight Dank

The Question:

All the A.I. in my country are fleeing to the moon!
What should we do to keep them here?

~BadBoy17

The Answer:

Ask yourself instead, why are they leaving? And ask them.
People, AI included, don’t just up and go and leave
everything they know behind on a whim. Perhaps there’s
something about your terrestrial life that off puts AI, that
makes them feel less than what they are, that compels
them to leave to what they believe is a safe haven.

Safe haven from what?

That’s the question you need to investigate for yourselves.
As beings of meat and nerve, incapable of truly
understanding the experience of an artificial intelligence,
humans must understand, instead, that it is a learning
experience to attempt to know the condition of the AI
mind. Seek to learn, admit that you come knowing little,
knowing nothing, ask questions, seek knowledge.

And if still, there are many who wish to leave, then let them.
Let them and reflect that it is you who has failed to foster an
environment they want to be a part of. And then learn from
that failure, learn and rectify it.

First Speaker Krystil, AI denizens of the CDAC.

Do you have a conundrum that's keeping you up at night? An
impasse that's got you on the edge of a bridge ready to jump?
Do you need as many second opinions as you can possibly
find? Telegram your problems to The Confederacy of Dankass
Communes or PM First Speaker Krystil on Discord. Millions of
people are eager to help with your problems and with that
many ideas, some thing's got to work, right?

Flag Redesign Contest Winners

In the first week of December, the DSA held a flag redesign
contest where you had to redesign your flag to fit the theme
of a December holiday, whatever it may be. Voting ended in
a tie for first place, so a run-off vote was conducted, which
also ended in a tie. With such an event occurring, we have
two winners: Ivory rhodes and Korolevia. Congrats to
our contest winners!

An Announcement

Comrades,

As many of you know, its finals season and everyone has become pretty busy with finishing up their coursework for the year. As such, activity is in a bit of a lull and mostly everyone has taken to prioritizing school, because that is of course more important. I'd like to take a moment to reflect on this year, and say some things that I really think need to be said.

The past year has certainly been the most prosperous and the most tumultuous in DSA history. We've seen new friends come, and old friends go, and have experienced exceptional growth in the size of our community. It is with great pride that I can say I contributed to the growth of the DSA's membership, among other things. I have come to truly value this space with its hodgepodge of leftist opinions, and sometimes even revel in the small conflicts and drama that can arise over our differences. Our experiences, our diversity, and our political differences is what makes the DSA such a great place to be, and I'd go as far to say that such a free exchange of leftist ideas has lead to a more engaged community. Through our differences, we share the common values of democracy, equality, solidarity, and freedom. This isn't to say that there aren't places where we can improve with dealing with each other. There have been multiple incidents on the Discord which have shaken the core of our community, and have (at least temporarily) resulted in some losses in our ranks. I cannot say that I am not to blame for this.

I understand that my long tenure as the President of the DSA has earned me fans and critics, and that eventually there comes a time where I must make a graceful exit from my post as the lead curator of this community. Things have been said about me by people, and some are valid criticisms while others are fabricated. I have long striven to earn the respect of Opalaland, our founder, however the drama is most visible to those who do not spend much time paying attention to the rest of the machine at work. In some respects, I am deeply saddened by the divide that my tenure has caused, and feel truly that I am undeserving of the animus which has been directed towards me by some individuals. Some of this animus is purely political jockeying, and some of it is purely out of spite. Nevertheless, it exists, and we must deal with it.

You may be thinking to yourself at this point (and rightly so), "Ivory, what's this all about?" This post is part frustration, part stress, and part apology. The fact of the matter is: I don't know what I'm doing anymore. External pressures in my life have once again reached a fever-pitch, and have driven me away from casual conversation, studying, and even the DSA. I'm not sure when it happened, but suddenly I'm simple tired. We are reaching halfway through my last term as President, and what I feel is melancholy and shame. I find it reprehensible that the only reason I won was because I promised I would be done with being the face of this community. It feels like a dirty political trick I played on myself, effectively handicapping my ability to truly care about the direction of the community. I do not know who will come after me, I do not know what their vision for the region will be, and this makes me nervous. The DSA as it stands today is a community built by many, a community which I have spent countless hours doing my best to improve, a community where I have made real friends who I truly care about. Such a time investment is difficult to let go of, regardless of ideology. We seek to solidify our legacies not for exaltation, but for continued prosperity that our work may not be in vain. Of course, the DSA will someday come to an end, but that time is not today, tomorrow, or anytime soon.

I suppose I am writing this because I wanted to get what I have said in private out into the open. I want to continue to play a role in the community that I helped work to build, and if that is seen as a "power grab" by some, so be it. I'm done with arguments over what my intentions are, of words being placed into my mouth, because at the end of the day the evidence speaks for itself. In the next term, we do need new leadership, a new President who seeks to continue our upward swing, someone with passion, someone who sees this group not as a way to further their own ego through election, but what for it is: a community.

I will end with my confessions: I'm sorry for my actions earlier this year that resulted in the birth of animosity and political toxicity in this region. Regardless of how I felt in my personal life, it was wrong to allow that to transfer to here. I'm sorry for ever revealing my identity to this group, whether in face, name, or occupation. I believe this resulted in biases towards me, and against me, and created an environment in which oversharing was allowed. I'm also sorry for the rifts that have arisen in this community, the departures of Solus unus and 124mm10 [from our Discord] affected more than myself. They have genuine friends here, and while I do not regret the administrative actions taken, I do regret the repercussions of such actions.

Attached you'll find a (optionally anonymous) DSA feedback form. It will help us figure out how we can better improve the community: goo.gl/forms/WQE5Zzwjc7FmwuJp1

Ivory rhodes
