Aperture Science Laboratories

Name

An "aperture" is an adjustable opening in an optical instrument, such as a camera or telescope, that controls the amount of light passing through a lens or onto a mirror. An "aperture" can also simply refer to any opening.
Aperture Science's name comes from the adjustable opening in an optical instrument, as Aperture is known for reliable, high quality civillian and military cameras and other optical equipment.

History

Aperture Science began (and currently still is) a gobernment-owned research department that focuses on making the unknown be known, and doing things that were once though of as impossible, possible. The first Aperture Science, "Aperture Innovations", opened on the 22nd of August, 1943, and was managed by Carl Johnson (1943-1966) and Caroline Johnson (1966-1975). Together, they built up Aperture "on the middle of nowhere" (Carl Johnson, 1951 Interview), however, with gobernment funding, they were capable of picking up pace quickly with private research federations and other businesses. They're main civillian focus was cameras, however, they also made glass panes, glasses, and even radios. Aperture began facing hardships during the mid-1960's, as gubernmental pressure to continue innovating was holding back on they're progress on converting stone into "compressed concre-stone" - a material stronger than concrete made with concrete and stone. In 1966, following the death of CEO Carl Johnson, a vote was made to decide whom would be the next CEO of Aperture. The vote resulted in Caroline Johnson, Carl's wife and assistant, becoming CEO.

From 1967 until 1985, Aperture would be tied to the gobernment even more after partnering up with Ilyun Cars GmbH., Ilyun Aircraft Design Gmbh., Messerschmidt GmbH., and Panzerstadt GmbH. Aperture would make the technology that these companies would use (electronics, weaponry, engines, jet turbines, etc. and their respective repair parts) and they would use those parts instead of buying from eachother or hiring private companies to do so. This began the gobernment's first big push for innovation, getting Caroline to sign a contract that, in 1975, Aperture would begin a large amount of changes, changes that would be for the better in the long term. In 1973, the construction of the Aperture Manufacturing Plant, on the back of the Aperture HQ, was finished.

In 1975, Aperture rebranded from "Aperture Innovations" to "Aperture Laboratories", a name they would keep until 1998. The era from 1975 to 1998 is very unknown. There are many things that are unknown to any public medium, however, there are some things that are known. From 1982 onwards, the "Android" programme was activated. From 1983, the "Genetic Lifeform and Disk Operating System (GLaDOS)" project was put into design (and eventual function), and from 1988 onwards, Aperture secured better contracts with Ilyun Central GmbH. and Messerschmidt GmbH., rising Aperture's yearly revenue by an aproximated 10%.

In 1992, the "and Disk Operating System" of the GLaDOS Project was fully functional. The first version of GLaDOS' mainframe, a 200 metre tall, 4-cooling-spiral supercomputer, was first booted on the 11th of January, 1993. Leaked images showcase the bottom of the supercomputer. Attached to it, are several "orbs". These are unknown, however, they were said to be control spheres which contained parts of her code that could be removed if deemed unnecessary at some point. Not enough is known about the GLaDOS Project to truly put light to it, however, we do know that in 1998, the "Genetic Lifeform" part of the GLaDOS Project was finished, and the now sentient supercomputer was put in charge of what would now be...

Aperture Science Laboratories, or just Aperture Science.

If little was known about the previous era of Aperture, even less is known about this particular sector in time that goes all the way to the present. It is said that it was GLaDOS herself that opened the Aperture Science Music Group and the Aperture Science Music Production centre, as well as the cancellation of the Neurotoxin program. Aperture Science has been contracted by several manufacturers around the Rynese Empire for various focuses, be it civillian, such as cameras, engines, and other such things of the sort, or contracted by City Police Forces to arm their police force. Aperture Science, ever since GLaDOS became the head, has been all over the place in terms of what they make. Various products, from electrical saws and drills, to cameras, music albums, tank weaponry and many other things have been found with the Aperture logo.

At the Central Meeting of 2040, hosted in the Königsberg Palace, on the 21st of May, GLaDOS made a feature appearance (or so was said) via video chat. Though her future plans for Aperture are unknown to the public, various sources that were there say that she did in fact talk about the future of both the Rynese Empire, AI Personhood, and Aperture Science's place in the world.

In 2043, however, a mass failure of the GLaDOS mainframe rig was reported, and the chamber where she was held was flooded with a dangerous gas - the remnants of the Aperture Science Consciousness Deactivation Gas, a type of neurotoxin - and then subjected to the anti-fire hazard spray. The damages to the GLaDOS mainframe are still not confirmed even 14 years later, as nobody has been able to enter the room and exit alive due to the remaining gas. Attemps to redirect the gas back to It's containment chambers have been attempted during the 2044-2050 period, however, they have had little luck. Some images have been attained from specific cameras that have captured the state of decay in GLaDOS' chamber, however, it is said to not matter until they can have human eyes calculate the amount of money the damages will cost.

As of current day (2057), with the entry of Postaegis Inferno Takahashi into the Aperture Science Associates Programme, a new chance to possibly assess, account for and then repair the damages has been created. It is said that, once prepared for the endeavour, Inferno Takahashi will lead a small team of engineers and programmers into the possibly very toxic chamber and conduct whatever repairs are needed to clear the air for a proper repair team.

Automata Project

Ever since 2032, Aperture Science had been working on the Automata Project, which is centered on developing mechanical lifeforms (Androids), whom would be utilized for general purposes, and act as but-other-citizens of the Rynese Empire. After 7 years of development, heavy experimentation and planning, Aperture Science has gone places with the project, and unveiled the first two models - Unit 1 Model A and Unit 1 Model B, 1A and 1B - at the National Technological Centre, during the National Tech Expo. The Automata Project by itself does not serve an exact purpose, however, most private (and some state backed or owned) security companies, such as SecuRoam and DSR Security have shown interest in utilizing Aperture Science Automatas as guards, and with extensive training, administration and management jobs. The Rynese General Defense Force has also shown interest in training them as mechanical soldiers, and some airports have even provided the funding to make them Air Traffic Controllers. However, all of these opportunities have been put on hold by Aperture staff, whom in a PSA said: "We do not have complete control over how each Automata will see the world, and how they will act upon it. They are free birds, just like we humans are. It's only right to let them pick their life path by themselves."

Automata Models

Unit 1-Series
- Model A: The Model A Unit 1 Automata is your standard male Automata, they are liquid-cooled, and utilize AS40C30A through J oil as their blood. They have the capacity to work in many fields if given correct training, and have their own consciousness. They come with their own Automata Server, so that they can back up their selves in case of damage or memory loss. The starting price is 78,800 RRM.

- Model B: The Model B Unit 1 Automata is your standard female Automata, they are liquid-cooled, and Utilize AS40C30A through E oil as their blood. They have the capacity to work in many fields if given correct training, and have their own consciousness. They come with their own Automata Server, so that they can back up their selves in case of damage or memory loss. The starting price is 79,700 RRM.

Unit 2 (Prototype)
- Model B: The Model B Unit 2 Automata (2B) is an upgraded 1B Automata, with a new bodystyle, and utilizing the preprogrammed personality type "2". She currently serves Herr Kaiserrin Tiara Iren-Takahashi, and has undergone military training. She is capable of wielding Rynazium(Shuto) Energy. The Model B Unit 2 series is a one-shot, so 2B is the only Model B Unit 2 in the world.

Unit 2 (Second Prototype)
- Model B/A2: The Model B/A2 Unit 2 Automata (for short, 'A2') was originally it's own separate project, which was then injected with the 2B-model systems. After an incident with the original 2B programming architecture, the A2 line was restructured, and is now a much more stable version of itself, while maintaining a high efficiency factor. The A2-line's first post-reprogramming android currently works under Postaegis Inferno Takahashi.
The B/A2 Models are capable of wielding Rynazium(Shuto) Energy, and comes with a set knowledge of military tactics and hand-to-hand combat skills. The starting price for a B/A2 Model is 128,000RRM
