The United Provinces of The Greater Portuguese Confederation is a huge, orderly nation, remarkable for its digital currency, otherworldly petting zoo, and complete lack of prisons. The hard-nosed, cynical, humorless population of 629 million Portuguese are ruled with an iron fist by the dictatorship government, which ensures that no-one outside the party gets too rich. In their personal lives, however, citizens are relatively unoppressed; it remains to be seen whether this is because the government genuinely cares about its people, or if it hasn't gotten around to stamping out civil rights yet.

The medium-sized, corrupt government prioritizes Defense, although Education, Industry, and Law & Order are also considered important, while Environment isn't funded at all. It meets to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Porto. The average income tax rate is 66.3%, and even higher for the wealthy.

The all-consuming Portuguese economy, worth 83.3 trillion shields a year, is driven entirely by a combination of government and state-owned industry, with private enterprise illegal. However, for those in the know, there is a large, well-organized, fairly diversified black market in Arms Manufacturing, Information Technology, and Automobile Manufacturing. The private sector mostly consists of enterprising ten-year-olds selling lemonade on the sidewalk, but the government is looking at stamping this out. Average income is an impressive 132,398 shields, and evenly distributed, with the richest citizens earning only 2.0 times as much as the poorest.

Search and rescue forces now accept cheques and all major credit cards, graverobbers claim they're acting within the interest of 'scientific preservation', it is common to see Maxémon Trainer listed on Portuguese resumés, and astronauts take one small step for The Greater Portuguese Confederation and one giant step backward from confrontation. Crime, especially youth-related, is totally unknown, thanks to a capable police force and progressive social policies in education and welfare. The Greater Portuguese Confederation's national animal is the iberian lynx, which teeters on the brink of extinction due to widespread deforestation.

The Greater Portuguese Confederation is ranked 178,515th in the world and 5,718th in the Pacific for Highest Crime Rates, with 2.1 Crimes Per Hour.
