Duchy of Retz
Retz, officially the Duchy of Retz and historically known as the Land of Retz is partially recognized de facto sovereign state in Western Europe. Until 2022, when the French Civil War broke out, the traditional Land of Retz had no political autonomy and most of its historical territory was part of the Loire-Atlantique department of France.

The Monarchy was proclaimed in 2022, in the early days of the French Civil War, as a neutral autonomous entity. Following its lack of recognization from both sides of the war and the Battle of Rezé, the Duchy proclaims its independence and was only recognized by a handful of states, its official recognizition by Ireland despite the Military Junta participated to the international legitimacy of this independence proclamation.

The Land of Retz gave its name to an intermediate culture which existed from 5600 to 5200 BC. The Land was later populated by Celtic tribes, at the end of Prehistory, who later founded the city of Rezé which gave its name to the Land. Retz became a Viguerie under Roman rule and later under Frankish rule. The Land of Retz is then part of the north of Aquitaine, later known as Poitou, until the IXth century when the Treaty of Angers (851) between King Erispoë of Brittany and King Charles II of France which recognized the former as a King and made the Land of Retz part of Brittany.

At the end of the Xth century, the Land of Retz becomes a Lordship. Retz later becomes a Barony during the rule of Gérard IV de Retz (1338-1344). Finally, in 1581, following the unification of the Duchy of Brittany in 1547 with the Kingdom of France and the marriage of Baroness Claude Catherine de Clermont with Albert de Gondi, a man of confident of Queen Catherine de Médicis from Florence, the Land of Retz becomes a Duchy. Long later, the Duke Alexandre de Brie-Serrant (1778-1790) sell titles from the Land, leading to it becoming a Barony again, however the financial projects of the Alexandre de Brie-Serrant fail due to the French Revolution and the Land of Retz loose its political existence. During the War in the Vendée, part of the Land of Retz is part of the Vendée Militaire, a counter-revolutionary movement in Western France which was extremely violently repressed, the modern Duchy of Retz was the first state to recognize the Vendéen Genocide following its independence. Since the French Revolution, the Land of Retz was part of the Loire-Inférieure department, later renamed Loire-Atlantique. Originally maintained in Brittany, the Loire-Atlantique department was removed from this region in 1941 by Vichy France and later separted again following the end of the Second World War in 1956 and made part of the Pays de La Loire region. This region, lacking of historical legitimacy, was contested in Loire-Atlantique numerous people still considered to be part of Brittany, as they were since 851.

The Retzian independance was unexpected until the French Civil War broke out between French Nationalists and French Insoumis in 2022. A local guerilla emerged in the early days of the war and took over most of its historical territory. Unlike other separatist movements, diplomacy allowed the movement to survive as the Duchy, when it was still de jure autonomous, managed to receive a Peacekeeper force from the United Nations which prevented a French invasion. While the Duchy didn't expected Insoumise France to tolerate their autonomy, they hoped that Nationalist France would tolerate it, the Battle of Rezé made it clear to Retzian leadership that autonomy was no longer an option and decided to declare independence on 17th September 2023.
Eastern territories of the Land of Retz are partly under French Nationalist control which lead to a strong diplomatic conflict between Retz and France, the latter still claiming all of the Land of Retz as part of France and refusing any sort of autonomous local entity.

Etymology
History

Archaeological sites along the coast of the Land of Retz led to an intermediate culture from 5600 to 5200 BC to be named the "Retzian" culture, this culture was also present in surrounding areas. This culture consisted in hunter-gatherers that resisted to agriculture, influences led to multiple goings and comings between these two systems as well as multiple production methods. Printed ceramic was introduced to this culture around 5400 BC and there was an advancement in the making of arrowheads.

At the end of Prehistory, Celtic peoples move to the Land and local tribes later found the city of Portus Ratiatus, which then became known as Ratiatum and is nowadays known as Rezé. This city, founded in the East of the Land of Retz, to the south of Nantes and the Loire River, gave its name to the Land. During Antiquity, the Land becomes a Viguerie and is soon known as the Pagus Ratiatensis (Pays de Retz; Land of Retz).
