The Nacradian Armed Forces is the defence force of the Federal Republic of Nacrad. It is considered one of the best trained in the region, and is a regional power. It dates back to 1894, initially as a weak militia, and has now grown substantially. It's anthem is LinkScotland the Brave, reflecting its origins from a British colony.

The Nacradian Armed Forces was formed in 1894 from the defection of the Royal Nacradian Brigade. It was led by Yu Tongsat, a Cantonese revolutionary, and had harassed the British until launching an all-out revolution in Punyu (Now Punyu Borough, Riverfort) and Victoria (Now Central & Western Borough, Portsville), leading up to the Nacradian War of Independence, on 20 May 1896, and becoming permanent as the Nacradian Armed Forces after British capitulation.

In 1905, after seeing the Qing Dynasty's defeat from the Japanese IJN, it was also decided to purchase 5 ships from the United States, and additionally construct 3 more locally, marking the beginning of the Nacradian Navy. With that, the Navy also took on the role of amphibious combat, which would become the Nacradian Marines.

After World War II, in order to better use Nacrad as a jumping-off point against the PRC, the United States again outfitted Nacrad with aircraft, and split the Airborne Division into the Nacradian Air Force.

Despite being far from the strongest military in the world, the strength of the Nacradian Armed Forces has increased. Since the 1960s, the Federal Republic of Nacrad has emerged as a viable regional power. It has aided the United States in regional conflicts, like the Korean War, Vietnam War, the Gulf War and others. In addition, due to its strategic position, it was also subject to much harassment from the PRC, though none of the attacks are successful. Nuclear weapons are produced to ensure Mutually Assured Destruction with its rivals, the Bund and the Comintern respectively.

It has been involved in proxy wars and anti-insurgency operations in the region against its rivals, and since 2001, it has been involved in the Global War on Terrorism. In general, Nacradian soldiers receive much praise from abroad, being cited as "more effective and braver than even the US Army" by some press agencies.

Nacrad is a major military leader in the Southeast Asian Treaty Organisation (SEATO), which is a regional cooperation organisation. SEATO is divided into 3 commands, namely the Northern Command Center, encompassing Nacrad, Tibet, Bhutan and the RoC; the Western Command Center, encompassing Indochina, and Southern Command Center, encompassing Imperial majapahit and the Philippines.

The Nacradian Armed Forces consists of 4 service branches, organised as detachments from a joint central command, namely the Army, Navy, Air Force and the Marines. In turn, these are divided into Corps, the highest level division, which are combined-arms from all branches. So far, the Nacradian Armed Forces have 4 Corps, namely the Western Mainland Corps (I Corps), the Eastern Mainland Corps (II Corps), Formosan Corps (III Corps) and Overseas Corps (IV Corps). The native forces set up in the Territory of North Africa, the North African Regiment (Volunteers), is the 488th Regiment in the 48th Division, the Nacradian Armed Forces Overseas (North Africa).

At the corps level, the different service branches are separated into Divisions for the Army and Marines, Fleets for the Navy and Wings for the Air Force. The base combat unit for the Army and Marines is the Regimental Combat Team, where most logistics operations are attached from the Divisional Command.

Additionally, the Armed Forces also oversees the National Guard in name. Unlike the rest of the reservists, the National Guard is funded and maintained by the host State or Territory, and is nominally under the command of the Governor. Unlike the United States National Guard, the Nacradian National Guard is under more restriction, insofar as to be barred from leaving the State in which they are based, unless specifically approved by the Governor, or when a National Guard member is also called to the federal forces as a reservist.

The Armed Forces of Nacrad is granted a rather large funding of USD$76,000,000,000 per year, putting it as the 3rd best funded military, taking up 1.9% of the national GDP. While there are demands to further lower this spending, it is deemed necessary to maintain its currently large funding to ensure national security in the face of communist China's provocations, and until recently, Kongsi's frequent incursions.

The budget is mostly used on the maintenance of the current stockpile of weapons, and is used to fund advance training, along with those for the National Guard in order to ensure the high quality of personnel and equipment.

Per the National Defence (Compulsory Service) Ordinance, Nacrad enacts universal conscription, where all citizens and residents of Nacrad must participate in a total of at least 62 weeks of military duty. However, this requirement does not apply to those of the Territory of Kongsi, or the Overseas Territory of Cyrenaica. All nationals, regardless of gender, must report to one of the 86 Designated Garrison Locations within 1 year of their 18th birthdays for training, which usually take place between June and August, during the summer holiday, and subsequently 1 year of military service. After 10 weeks of training, the national in question can choose to:
  • Complete 1 year of service immediately. They will immediately be transferred to the garrison in which they will carry out their duty. After the year of service is over, they may choose to become a career soldier with 4-year contracts, or be discharged.

  • Be released into civilian life. This is the most popular option, where their civilian belongings will be returned and they will be free to do whatever they please. However, they must enlist before they turn 30 in the Army, or face fines, or even prison time. After the year of mandatory service is done, they may choose to become a career soldier with 4-year contracts.

  • Enlist in a more specialised type of service as a career soldier. After basic training with the Army, they may choose to enlist in the Navy, Air Force or Marines as a career soldier before their 30th birthdays, wherein they they will receive specialist training.

  • Enlist in the Army as an officer, and as a career soldier. A national who has a university degree after receiving basic training can become an officer, after a test and 8 weeks of additional training. An enlisted person can also become an officer, though it is easier to enlist as an officer from the get-go.

  • Declare themselves a conscientious objector. In that case, 18 months of Alternative Civilian Service will be assigned, and the work is more similar to a part-time job.

After they have completed service and discharged, they are expected to report to a 4-week training course every other year, though this is not enforced, and only a small number report to training, and yet fewer to join the National Guard.

While in theory all nationals must participate in training, of the approximately 2 million that reach training age annually, about 500,000 are declared ineligible outright due to lacking physical strength, mental diseases (such as schizophrenia, psychosis and dissociative identity disorder) or religious objections to usage of weapons. Of the 1.5 million remaining, another 400k on average would declare themselves conscientious objectors, while about 75k would fail basic training, and less than half of the population would complete their services.

Additionally, specialised positions in the military, particularly Air Force pilots and Special Forces personnel, are available for early enlistment. Citizens may enlist as early as March, as opposed to the enlistment season in late August or December. This is often used by young citizens around their 18th birthdays, who wish to skip the Diploma of Secondary Education (DSE) exams for any reason.

Basic training lasts for 10 weeks, and has 3 distinct phases:

  • Phase 1: Phase 1 encompasses Weeks 1 and 2, wherein soldiers will be taught how to behave and think like a soldier. While the first few days the training is comparatively relaxed, the instructors will become progressively harsher as the week goes on. Trainees will learn how to address their peers and officers, along with marching, and other disciplinary items.

  • Phase 2: Phase 2 encompasses Weeks 3 to 5, and trainees' physical strength will be trained. Trainees are instructed on proper load-bearing techniques, and will be subject to intense physical training, like obstacle courses, abseiling, road marches, etc., and will be trained on chemical warfare. During the chemical warfare training, trainees will be led into a sealed chamber wherein CS gas (also known as tear gas) is released, and the trainees ordered to remove gas masks, and exposed for 5 minutes. Additionally, basic first aid is taught, in case there are injuries during the training process.

  • Phase 3: Phase 3 encompasses Weeks 6 to 10, and trainees will learn about skills useful in combat. Soldiers will first learn about wilderness survival, such as water purification, food foraging, etc., and then be issued weapons, where they will learn about safety protocols, its accessories, and will be instructed on marksmanship. Bayonet combat is also learnt in this stage. On the final 3 days of training, a war game will be held, and soldiers are expected to use their knowledge gained in the past 10 weeks, and will be assessed accordingly.

The Nacradian Armed Forces uses a wide variety of weapons, many of which are developed or produced locally, with exceptions to aircraft and ships. Nacradian equipment is tailored to be compatible with NATO standards, but the mechanisms are best described as a hybrid between NATO and Warsaw Pact standards, such as the Type 5 Assault Rifle, which uses the best features of the M4/M16 and the AK series.

The following numbers are estimated active duty vehicle numbers, and excluding those serving in National Guards or Territorial Guards.

The Nacradian Armed Forces finds itself overstretched due to its small size compared to powers both allied and opposed, with less than one million active servicemembers for Service Year 2020-21 but fighting 3 wars, as a result, the Ministry of Defence is currently looking into automation, particularly the use of unmanned aerial vehicles, and further force multipliers to reduce the required number of personnel. The military budget is expected to increase, in order to defend against a possible PRC invasion, and the total personnel count is very likely to exceed 1 million in the Service Year 2021-22. Several politicians also call for the abolishment or relaxation of conscription after making Kongsinese Nacradians eligible for draft per the National Defence (Compulsory Service) Ordinance, as this is expected to increase the number available for military service by not less than 20%.
