Lorynia's major religions

In Lorynia, as in many nations, there exists a variety of faiths. Noneteheless, only a few have had lasting important effects on the nations culture, or gained significant following.

The most important one of these was (and still is) Lorynia's native faith : "Elreithalyn", wich can loosely be translated as "path among the stars". It consists of a mixture of spirit and ancestor worship combined with a pantheon of gods, and exists in a myriad of interpretations. Most of these share some common traits : a measure of respect, awe and wonder for the natural world (including outer space), a reverence of the ancestors, and a sense that any action is religious or spiritual, if done with the right motives. It encourages people to dream and wonder, to explore, and to live life to the fullest in celebration of all that is and might be. It is still prominently present in everyday life, and its oftentimes colourfull celebrations and festivals are mixed with more quiet, serene ceremonies that guide a lorynian throughout his or her life. In many ways observing it is done subconsciously, as it is so interwoven with everyday life, with every action potentially being a gift to the gods, that it completely prevades Lorynian culture. It is a relatively tolerant faith that can only be cruel towards intolerant faiths, but cares little about atheïsts or other deniers of the divine, simply saying that even they walk the path, and are just free to chose not to see it.

The second most prominent faith is Cathar christianity, though this differs fairly considerably from its original form. As a result, it is oftentimes just called Lorynian christianity, and is a bit of a mash between the native faith, catharism, orthodox christianity and bogomilism.
It was introduced during the 2nd Lorynian crusade, where reconverted cathar nobles and soldiers as a penance were ordered to crusade against the pagan Lorynians. They succeeded in carving out several crusader states, but far removed from catholic christians they relapsed into their heresy, wich found far faster acceptance amongst the lorynians than catholicism, wich they traditionally hated.
It is followed by an important minority of Lorynians, and has had some influence on architecture and culture.

A seperate description of both religions will follow later, as well as a description of minor religions in Lorynia.
