Burn the heretic, kill the mutant, purge the unclean!

- Unofficial motto of the Keldrosian Inquisition

The Keldrosian Empire combines great scientific achievements with a deep commitment to the faith of their fathers: Roman Catholicism. Weekly Mass attendance is an astonishing 90%. Ironically, the Keldrosian government has an uneasy relationship with the Holy See. The Vatican applauds Caesar's commitment to upholding the institution of marriage and stern anti-abortion stance, but has often criticized him for Keldros's policies towards homosexuals, religious minorities, and consistent refusal to accept refugees onto its shores. Although Caesar is a Catholic in good standing, he is known to harbor sympathy for the Society of St. Pius X, a traditionalist fraternity of priests with an ambiguous relationship to the Church. "The Society carries on as if Vatican II [an Ecumenical Council of the Church which ran from 1962 to 1965 and significantly altered the Church's liturgy and attitudes toward the modern world] never happened. Church liberals act as though the first 1962 years of Church history never happened. I try to strike a happy medium," Caesar said.

The Keldrosian government provides generous support to Catholic institutions within the nation's borders and abroad. The Inquisition is a Church-led organization which operates its own tribunals. Clergy act as judge and jury when trying accused heretics and witches. If the accused are found guilty, they are remanded to the Keldrosian government for punishments which range from reeducation, imprisonment, or death. Although the Catholic Church currently frowns on capital punishment, Caesar dismisses their complaints. "If the Church won't enforce her own laws, then the State will do the job for her," he said.

The people of Keldros fulfill their obligations as Catholics, but the depths of their true religious faith vary. Regardless of their personal piety, almost everyone agrees that Christianity is a pillar of Western civilization and indispensable to the kind of society in which they want to raise their children.
