The hard-nosed, hard-working, cynical, humorless, devout population of 8.585 billion Gensokeyoans are kept under strict control by the oppressive government, which measures its success by the nation's GDP and refers to individual citizens as "human resources."

The government — a sprawling, bureaucracy-choked, corrupt, moralistic, well-organized morass — juggles the competing demands of Spirituality, Law & Order, and Environment. It meets to discuss matters of state in the capital city of Human Village. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 59.2%.

The strong Gensokeyoan economy, worth 277 trillion Yen a year, is highly specialized and mostly made up of the Uranium Mining industry, with significant contributions from Cheese Exports and Soda Sales. Black market activity is rampant. Average income is 32,292 Yen, but there is an enormous disparity between incomes, with the richest 10% of citizens earning 173,106 per year while the poor average 3,148, a ratio of 55.0 to 1.

Business leaders are mailing Yukari Yakumo forged birth certificates in a bid to win their rivals as serfs, citizens are regularly arrested in queues for 'loitering', claims adjusters are uselessly vague, and loss of the ability to speak is a common affliction of the elderly. Crime, especially youth-related, is relatively low, thanks to the all-pervasive police force. Gensokeyo's national animal is the Youkai, which frolics freely in the nation's many lush forests, and its national religion is Folk Shinto.
