The Stavros Years

After almost six decades of absolute supremacy over the People's Republic of Cedoria, Chairman Vallance Vallen died, at the age of 82, to mass national and international mourning. His state funeral was the largest in the country's history, and attended by hundreds of foreign dignitaries and heads of state. Immediately following his death, Foreign Affairs Commissar Ricky Stavros was elected as Chairman.

Stavros proved to be a more flexible and reformist leader than Vallen, relaxing some of the more stringent social controls and permitting limited expressions of political dissent. He cut military spending and redirected government spending to productive civilian sectors of the economy.

With Cedoria now a major industrial power, efforts were made to develop more service oriented post-manufacturing economic sectors, information technology and tourism became fast-growing sectors of the economy, and the People's Revolutionary Armed Forces received a dedicated cyber-warfare unit for the first time. The People's Intelligence Agency was also reorganised and streamlined, making it considerably more effective in foreign and domestic intelligence operations.

Stavros's reforms were applauded by many, however some of the more hardline Vallenist elements of the Party were upset at his willingness to take advice from many sources and his more diplomatic approach to non-communist powers.

Internationally, Stavros pursued a thaw of relations with the Capitalist powers, a relaxation of tensions and a less provocative foreign policy abroad. While Cedoria still fought several small-scale conflicts in this time, it's interventions were primarily concerned with defending it's allies and protecting it's own influence, rather than expanding it further.

Stavros retired after eighteen years of rule, leaving Cedoria a more internationally respected, diplomatically adept and economically advanced power.
